Writing Services

Posted on 21 May 2009

I don’t know about you all, but sometimes I just don’t have the time to write. When this happens I use the services of another writer. Some of us just don’t have the time to write everything ourselves if we have multiple projects going on at the same time. Also, let’s face it here, some of us are better writers than others.  Here’s where my experience as an entrepreneur comes in, I delegate.

writing penYou can have freelancers write:

  • website home pages
  • website content
  • SEO articles
  • ghost blog posts
  • ebooks
  • press releases
  • and more…

Basically they can write just about anything you need.

I have a confession to make. I have used a ghost blog for one, and only one, post on ChefPatrick.com. I bet you can’t tell which article it was though…and no it’s not this one! That’s the beauty of it. They write with your voice. You get the credit and it’s confidential. If their article doesn’t sound good to you, you can tweak it to make it better or fit your personality better. Ultimately, the bulk of the work was done for you, meaning you saved time and used it elsewhere for more important things.

Beware though! You have to be willing to pay a good rate to get some good writing.  I want you to learn from my mistakes here. So let me tell you about my experience with this. At one point I was developing websites and flipping them. I wanted to be able to offer original content, but I didn’t have the time to research and write everything myself. A few times I hired someone, paying between $5-10, to write several different web site content articles. Here’s where the saying “You get what you pay for!” comes in. Every single time I did this my wife had to either highly edit their work or completely re-write their stuff.  The problem was that most of the time their English speaking skills sucked and that came through in the articles. Another problem was that they flat out plagiarized, but tried to mask it by changing 1 or 2 words here and there. Unacceptable.  Inevitably my wife or myself wound up cleaning up the work. The problem with this was we had to fix so much that we could have written the articles ourselves in the same time it took to fix the garbage ones.

I don’t have to explain the importance of good content to you all. For SEO purposes, you should have quality content up on your sites. This is where a writer comes in. A lot of freelance writers out there today know the importance of this and are ready and eager to write them for you.

Now, don’t completely excuse yourself of any responsibility here. In order for this relationship to work you need to be clear and concise when communicating your wants and needs from them. Be specific. Tell them if an article is just informational or if you have certain keywords you want used and how many times you want them used. If you have notes or an outline prepared, show them to your writer because it’s material they will be able to use and it will give them concise directives. Again, be as specific as you possibly can. This will aid the writer tremendously and cut out any confusion on their part.

Will you have to spend a lot?

In my opinion no. The good thing is, most of the time they aren’t outrageously expensive. For an article of 500 words most quality freelancers will charge roughly $25 or more. Of course depending on what you need, prices vary. Writers usually charge upwards of $50 for ghost posts and several hundred, if not thousands for ebooks. I don’t know about you, but my time is worth more than $25 an hour and I will happily pay that after learning my lesson the hard way.

Where do you find a quality writer?

Your in luck because my wife is a great writer and we are now offering these services right here. I personally guarantee any of the work!

Not interested in using my services, no problem. It’s a lot easier than you think to find one. Ask people you know if they have anyone they use for writing. You can get some good referrals from people that have tried their services already. There are also freelance sites you can post jobs on where the freelancers will bid for the work. Guru.com is one of the most popular sites offering this today.

I’ve actually been looking for an article writer myself lately — it’s not the writing I have time trouble with but the coming up with ideas about what to write about. I can crank out a 500 word post in 10 minutes pretty easily once I know what I want to write about but it might take me 1-2 hours to get to that point..

I’ve tried to cut corners in other areas in the past (web design, logos) and my experience has been exactly what you said — you get what you pay for.

I completely agree with you about $25 being a bargain — if you had someone write even say 10 posts per month for you when you don’t have time, it’s only costing you what your site makes on that top banner ad :)

With a site as popular as yours Patrick, I’d think you could find people to write for free even — ChefPatrick.com has a lot more readers than most of the domain blogs out there, so it’d be an opportunity for bloggers to potentially get more visitors to their site by writing quality posts on yours.

You are a great writer Reece. You truly amaze me with the amount of quality articles you put out on LLLL.com day in and day out.

I’ve been lucky to have a few guest writers :)

$25 for 500 words, that sounds like you are really taking care of your writers. I pay a lot less but I have a guy that gets me good content. I pay around 1.5 cents a word and most of my jobs are around 2000-4000 so their average job is $30-$60. I am happy with the costs and they are happy with regular jobs. They do charge a lot more for their currently clients but I started back when they were cheaper and he has kept the price the same for me.

It took me a long time to find the guy though, I had to go through a lot of crap! I used to hire the cheapest guy I could and almost always got crap back. I do have a guy that writes pretty good and charges me $3 per 500 words but when I need perfect English and good writing skills I go to my 1.5 cent/word guy…

I just put up my third site this week with his content. One of the sites that he wrote for me is CheapMotorcycleInsurance.org. It cost me about $30 for the content, $8 for the header, $9 for the domain and less than 1 hour to throw up the site. Less than $50 for a site, and just 1 hours of my time… worked out pretty good for me=)

That’s a great find Troy. You definitely got lucky with your 1.5 cents a word guy. Especially getting in when you did because they charge more now.

I have brought writing services from people at Digital Point. The first time I brought from someone there writing service was rubbish and made no sense at all, I eventually managed to find one person who was great and willing to work cheap and still managed to provide a quality service.

That’s how I’ve found writers in the past, forums. Every single time my wife or I have had to rewrite everything.

There are certainly good writers out there for great rates. I’d suggest to anyone shop around to find what is best for them. For me, paying an extra penny or two a word to get top quality and not have to worry about results is the way to go.

Welcome to the biz, wifey :)

What are her specialties, niche wise?

I agree with you on this one Patrick. Its better to pay a good penny over something that is not 100%. Though i have had some cheap article writers write some amazing stuff, but this is a hit or miss. Most of the time it is a miss.

Jeff and Mike,

My wife can truly right about anything. In fact I find her biggest flaw to be her biggest advantage. She takes a lot of time researching a topic to really understand everything before ever picking up the pencil.

Give her a chance, it will be worth every penny.
