Who Is The Worst Registrar

Posted on 22 October 2008

I think we all know the best registrar is GoDaddy. Well at least that is my personal opinion and from talking with other domainers it is usually between Moniker and GoDaddy. One question I get different answers on is who is the worst registrar? I want to here what my readers have to say.

In a couple weeks I will send the losing registrar an email with our results and ask them what they plan on doing to better their company. Once I here back from them I will be sure to post their response. Without comments I will not be able to send an email to the worst registrar.

Please vote and add a comment to why you think your choice is the worst. These comments will be used in my email to the losing registrar.

Who Is The WORST Registrar?

  • GoDaddy (30%, 46 Votes)

I personally would have to say 1and1. I purchased a domain name from another domainer. In order to take the domain I had to open up an account. 1and1 does not let you open an account without spending money. I called their customer service several times, the only answer they had for me was to buy there hosting at $3.99 a month so I can open an account.

I wound up transferring the domain name to GoDaddy which I do like. I was not happy about this because in order to transfer to another registrar you have to pay the new registrars transfer fee. Taking that into consideration the domain name purchased really was not worth it.

netsol, worst registrar since it was hackable before and i lost a .com with them and they still billed me, only way to stop them from doing this, is by requesting a chargeback on my credit card and closing it.

Well this was an easy choice for me, Fabulous by far. What’s my reason? Definitely the high prices they charge. There’s no reason they have to charge so much. Not so fabulous to me when it comes to their prices.

Andrew, how is $7.30 for .com/$5.35 for .net registrations/transfers/renewals at Fabulous.com a high price? IMO this is an excellent price, and their customer service is by far the best I’ve ever come across. Their executive lock for your best domains is free and is a great service.

I was being charged $ 19.95 to renew a domain I had. Do their rates differ based on the domain name at hand?

Maybe the $19.95 renewal rate is an old rate Andrew, but their website home page shows the current rates that I quoted above. It could be that you may have to have a minimum number of names with them to get this rate, but I’m sure their customer service will answer you promptly with questions such as this.

BTW I have no association with Fab at all except that I have amalgamated my portfolio with them for ease of management, and I like that ppc earnings can be used for renewals.

Fabulous and Moniker are tied for best… the 19.95 rate at Fab is for a retail account, you need to set up a wholesale/monetization account to get the cheapest rates.

GoDaddy is by FAR the worst registrar. Anyone who thinks they are best should not call himself a domainer. Their site is the most cluttered, difficult to use mess out there; they force you through boat loads of upsell; and they hold your names an extra 60 days for the slightest change.

Register then Enom are 2nd and 3rd worst. Both make it very difficult to transfer out (intentionally so).

They have a free .biz offer now, I’d be glad to skip it.

I voted Godaddy because I do not like all the advertising they shove in your face about renewing for an extended period of years and encouraging you to register different domains again and again.

Easy the worst is enom, second worst is godaddy.com, why, they are least lightly to protect your domains in the event the government comes calling.

There is nothing more important that the protection of your domains.

Not the $.20 difference, not their interface.

First id like to say great idea Patrick.

for me there are a few, snapnames because you end up with that many user IDs you don’t know weather your coming or doing.

enom as i have a major problem with them at the minute, i bought a domain it was pushed to my enom account, the whois is still showing as the previous owner and every time i speak to support they tell me my account is under a reseller, the reseller went bust over a year ago, my account is now direct with enom, but every time i have a problem i get the same NOTHING from support, i usually end up having to ring them. This time i cant as they have changed there system and i need a pin number i don’t have.

But all that said, my vote for the worst registrar as to go to 1and1, we use them to register .fr domains for clients, every time a domain is due for renewal (this is 1and1.fr) they auto bill you adding 16euros for Norton anti-virus, when you contact them they say you selected it, but i know i didn’t as i wouldn’t have it given to me.
To solve this i changed CC on file to one i was getting rid of, then canceled it, so now they send a invoice, again with the 16euros for Norton, but when i then rang them to renew the domain minus the Norton of course, they will not let you renew with CC, you have to send them a cheque and a letter explaining you don’t want the Norton that you didn’t order.

This happens every single time. well i have had enough! i am now transferring all domains out, but guess what! its not as simple as they make out, its going to be a long and tedious process for every domain involving contacting their customer support etc writing confirms that must be sent by snail mail.

A TOTAL NIGHTMARE!!!

Yahoo! is turning to the worst registrar for me as they increase their annual charges from $10 to $34. I have no idea about other listed registrar, only worked with GoDaddy & Name. They both are really good.

I would find that godaddy is quite simply the worst. I don’t like their terms of not allowing you to transfer for 60 days if you change the one little bit of infomation like updating your address.

In my opinion this poll loses all credibility by the ridiculous statement that Godaddy is the BEST registrar…

I mean fair enough, your opinion BUT the masses cant be wrong.. Godaddy has the most domains/customers, but the majority of their customers dont like them hence why they are rapidly losing market share.

There prices arnt great, their support staff are monkies, the charge stupid fees, play with your valuable domains without consent, dont work for their customer, work for themselves etc etc..

Actually there is not one good thing about Godaddy.

What is more ‘Best Registrar’ is always contested between moniker and dynadot.. noone else. Simple as, end-of.

I voted EuroDNS for the worst. Their pricing is extremely expensive and their interface is terrible. However I would vote Fabulous as being the best, they are awesome.

I voted for register.com because you have to call to get an authorization code, their rates are excessive and I think there is a cost for transferring out.

Godaddy – all the advertising I have to click through drives me crazy. I use their service for as short a time as possible (buying from other domainers) then transfer out.

Secondly I don’t like the risk of loosing my domains (as Michael mentioned) if/when issues come up so I utilize Cheapies as they are a Canadian based registrar and have a history via domainnamesystems of protecting their client first and foremost.

If GoDaddy is voted as the worst registrar you better believe I will send them a letter. I will send a letter directly to Bob Parsons. Regardless of my personal opinions this is domainer news and a domainer blog.

You can believe this because I approved your message to be seen.

On another note, GoDaddy may be voted as the worst but think about this. They register more domain names than any registrar period. This exposes them to more customer issues than the other registrars.

Haha good try.
Godaddy has a lot of domains because it was one of the first registrars. What is more at first in probably was the best option..

Simple fact of the matter is I would say quite confidently that the owners of at least 50% of the domains there dislike them…

I would have to go with NetSol – They have the worst user interface and make it a pain to even change your nameservers.

And of course, they try to con you in to multiple hosting packages, add-ons, etc. similar to GoDaddy. I like the smaller, more personable registrars as opposed to the huge ones.

I’m amazed that 5 people voted fabulous as being the worse. They’re simply amazing with all the tools they offer. As being the worst, that would be most of the others on this list. NSI, Register.com, GoDaddy, EuroDNS are all s*** registrars..

I love Dynadot. This is the best registrar. Simple, straightforward, fair prices, no in your face ads. I highly recommend especially if you register IDNs, and yes, I know it is not on the list but it should be.

The worst I have to say GoDaddy. You have to have a customer service agent walk you through transferring your domain to another registrar because the link to do it is buried in the interface.

I currently have several domains being held hostage for 60 daysbecause I had to change my e-mail address for WHOIS. I made the mistake of taking the free privacy settings for multiple registrations. The private registration is too expensive after the first year and too complicated to turn off. You literally have to log into a separate account on a different website to turn off the private setting.

And if you aren’t very careful setting up your private registrations you can easily and accidentally set up multiple accounts, meaning you would have to log into each separate private registration account to manage it. Completely ridiculous.

Net Sol for their prices, outsourcing customer support, and domain tasting.

For the haters, Godaddy has it’s good and bad like everyother registrar.

The Good: Bob does not outsource techical support. Being able to speak to someone 24/7 who speaks English combined with their excellent service is why I use them. Whoever said they are rapidly losing their market share are obviously misinformed. Most people are NOT domainers. Most are Joe the Plumber buying a domain for his plumbing business. Visit http://www.registrarstats.com and see how they leave the competition in eating dust.

For those who cry about navigating a SIMPLE website crack me up. Their site is busy for a reason people……It’s called marketing. If you can’t figure out how to click on the “No Thanks” button to skip the upsells to finish your order, than your just lazy. You can’t make money in any business if you don’t “ask for the sale”, jeeez.

The Bad: Releasing domains in that Kentucky thing rubbed me wrong. Also hearing horror stories about them policing the internet and suspending sites (ie. spam/content) and charging a fee to leave is why I spread domains between Fabulous and Moniker.

Thanks for letting me rant.

1and1 is a nightmare, especially if you have a large portfolio. Issues that I personally had:
1. No tools to unlock domains with a click; need to get transfer code and unlock your domains one by one,
2. If you want to cancel a domain or turn off automatic renewal, they want you to fax a document (they don’t require a fax if when you register),
3. They keep charging to your credit card unless you go through the fax process. Sending email to customer service, giving a call, asking for a manager to talk doesn’t work. They renewed my domains, and billed later even though my credit card on file has expired. I could not find a friendly customer service agent to have it reversed. I did not pay, and they sent me to a collection agency. I eventually gave up! Such a waste of time.
4. Their grouping of domains sucks. You can manage each group separately, no way to combine them. Very tedious, unfriendly user interface.

People keep complaining about godaddy, but they have good, friendly customer service representatives and a certain standard. 1and1 doesn’t understand what customer service means. At least in the US. Now, I share my experience with all the domainers/friends I know. Just think about the damage for collecting $100+ from an unhappy customer.

By far the best service/pricing I received is from Fabulous. As my domain names are close expiration I move them to Fabulous.

1&1 is the worst registrar. The reason is that they have a heavy interface and it loads slow. I’ve three domains over there and I’ll transfer soon.

I would say 1an1.com as worst registrar. i registered about 50 domains there thinking it is cheap. but i knew later they are the worst. They do not have any service for account change. They delete the domain and re-register from other account. This is the worst registrar ever seen.

NO account transfer. I am stuck with them with my domains.

Well, I got to say. My first reaction to this poll was almost immediately to vote for 1and1 as the worst registrar. As I was about to vote, I decided to write an article on my own blog, because I realized I hadn’t written an article that day. As I was writing, a little karma happened, and my vote changed, and so did my article (you can read this karma article on <a href=”http://www.dnunderground.com/karma-with-godaddy-article-wondering-why-it-was-so-bad/” title=”DNUnderground.com”).

My vote ended up changing to GoDaddy as the worst registrar. I was treated like crap when I called customer support, which definitely surprised me considering my past phone calls and how nice they have been. The woman who helped me wouldn’t help me, and was lazy. And I know every registrar is going to have these kind of worker’s working for them, who don’t like their job and treat customer’s like myself like crap. But this woman, and the way she didn’t take me seriously at all made me hate GoDaddy.

Also, I got to say, I have hated this new GoDaddy redesigned site they have put up about 2-4 months ago, and is still up. It’s ugly, and harder to navigate.

So anyways, my vote went to GoDaddy as the worst registrar. I don’t know what I will do about my domains there, and whether I will continue to use them as much as I do, but this one call really just ticked me off.

If you ask me godaddy is the worst registrar ever. I have my own reasons. t takes a long time for me to load their pages because I have a slow internet connection. Then the other problem which I have is that when I now try to make payments through paypal, they want me to add another new credit card information which i am not willing to do. Previously when I made payments via paypal they never asked me this information and now they do. So godaddy just is not the one for me.

Ashish

no offence, but your slow internet connection is not a reason to say that GoDaddy is the worst registrar. You should rather consider getting a better, faster connection.

I have always used Paypal and they’ve never asked me for any additional credit card information. Check if your paypal account is certified or create a Payment Agreement with Godaddy.com

Both issues seem to be at your end, to be honest.

yes, as Patrick says i got a email from one of the guys at enom who very kindly helped me sort everything out for me.

I must admit my hassles where all because my account was through a reseller, as i said in my original post a good friend of mine swears by enom.

So its a big thumbs up for enom

I must say I’m sorry to see the figures have changed to godaddy now looking bad, i cant believe they are rating worse than 1and1, 1and1 are bar far the worst and could learn a lot from enom.

I must admit that the new godaddy site as been a nightmare, things seem to be settling down now but at one point i couldn’t get in to renew domains or accept transfers, it was a nightmare.
