.TV Sinking with The Island

Posted on 22 January 2009

About two weeks ago Bob Parsons insinuated on his video blog that the domain extension .TV would vanish with the sinking island of Tuvalu. Because of this brand new discovery (sarcasm) Bob is jumping ship and getting on the .me wagon. You can watch for yourself below.

It is true that Tuvalu is sinking, this is nothing new. We have known that the island of Tuvalu has been sinking for years and years. In fact this very same .tv discussion was mentioned back in 2004 on USAToday.com’s website. Reading the article explains the .tv extension is going nowhere, even if the island of Tuvalu does sink.

So why is Bob Parsons making a fuss of this now? Either he didn’t read the article in USA Today from 2004 or he is trying to make money. My guess would be the latter.  Bob is doing what he does best and trying to generate a buzz around the .me extension to boost registrations. If this was anything but about advertising Bob would simply use the .com version of his name which he owns and forwards to his .me extension.

I did email Bob’s PR Specialist Melanie today and asked that she pass on the question “Why the recent change of heart with the extension .tv”.  Actually I requested an interview with Bob Parsons about two months ago, November 24th to be exact. I submitted my questions and have been told with the holidays and now the Superbowl advertising Bob is extremely busy. I have to question the comment about Bob being busy, on January 14th I posted an interview he did with .INC Magazine. In that interview Bob was asked, you must be a real busy guy? Bob’s simple answer, “actually I’m not”. Hopefully Bob will read this and give some response.

In the mean time, don’t give up on the extension .tv, it is one of my favorites :)

While .COM is king and one cannot register .TV with any domain, I also like .TV and have no plans to register any .ME domains.

It’s godaddy’s perogative to promote whatever extension they feel is flavor of the month, that is not in dispute.

To blatantly put down .tv in order to promote .me is nauseating and pathetic. Especially from a company that has previously aggresively promoted dot tv.

Haha, nice detective work there Patrick! :)

I only own a couple of .tvs myself, however I still think it was low for Bob to do what he did in this case, especially after they’ve been promoting .tv so much in the past. I think there’s about as many domainers who buy .tv for Tuvalu as there are domainers who buy .me because it’s for Montenegro (did I spell that right LOL?).

Im a fan of .tv domains – I dont own that many but I own a few – I havent got the .me ext at all.

I personally havent invested in any .me domains and at present I have no intensions of investing in the .me domains either

I dont know why GoDaddy would want to push this maybe they arent making enough money on there .tv domains but I doubt that they are one of the most expensive registrars for .tv domains.

Well there is my moan for the day!

Im selling Rejoice.tv & Compensation.tv should anyone be interested!

Regards,

Robbie

.tv is going nowhere and .me is going nowhere FAST!

Stick with the .tv, it seems much more established and should pass the test of time. Dot Me on the other hand is… how do I say it politely? Garbage!

Bob is busy looking for girls to represent Godaddy…..

The reason Bob is advertising .me is because he knows that the .tv sales will not increase while the .me sales can increase a lot more. He is just trying to make a bit more money for his holiday lol

btw nice one Patrick, really enjoyed reading it.

.TV will likely be reclassified from a ccTLD to a gTLD if the country of Tuvalu goes under. There are far too many stakeholders in .TV for .TV to be allowed to “sink”.

I have supported GoDaddy over many years with many thousands of dollars. And I resent Bob trashing the extension when his customers supported it and have a vested interest in what .TV brings to the net … which is actually something pretty special.

Basically, his comments showed no consideration for his customers. And his insinuation that the extension is sunk is not fact based. Furthermore, I’ve never posted on his blog, but did in this instance. My comments have not been published on his blog yet either.

I have publicly supported GoDaddy for a number of years. Anymore of these irresponsible comments from Mr. Parsons, and I will leave on principle alone. A real shame.

Personally,

I think .TV was a fail from the beginning. I couldn’t agree with Bob more when he says it was the worst extension/investment of ‘08 (or however he phrased it). I don’t think .me is that great either, all though it is good for personal sites. But for me, well I will probably be sticking with my regular .com’s, .net’s, .org’s, and .info’s :) Then again, I am pretty boring when it comes to my investments :D
