Interview with Elliot Silver

Elliot Silver has been blogging since June 2007 and has not stopped since.  I really applaud him for this, it is extremely difficult to take a blog and continue writing month after month supplying new information.  I am not the only one to notice, he has been awarded blog of the year 2008 by DomainTools.com, DomainerChoiceAwards.com and if memory serves me correct he won something at TRAFFIC.

Beyond his blogging Elliot is becoming a big player in the Geo domain name scene.  He owns domains like Lowell.com and Burbank.com which are 2 of the top 250 populated US cities.  I know what Elliot paid for Lowell.com, it was no joke.  Elliot is a serious full time domainer, making waves and here to stay.

Q. I read the bio on your blogs, says you are a graduate of NYU, do you think your education has helped in anyway with your domaining business?
A.
I attended grad school at NYU and graduated with a Master’s Degree in Direct and Interactive Marketing. One of the hallmarks of direct marketing is that you should test everything – creative, price point, call to action…etc. – all of which can be done by using a variety of domain names in a campaign. In grad school, I also learned about the importance of being able to calculate your return on investment for any marketing effort.  By using a call to action domain name for different campaigns, you can see where visitors learned about your product/service and track your ROI. Trouble Selling Your Domain Names

Are you having trouble selling your domains? Well, do not feel bad most people in the industry have this problem. Let me tell you why. Simply put, the names you are trying to sell suck. Sorry to say it but its true. Now do not go and get offended by this, we all own crappy names. Do not kid yourself that every domain name you own is worth thousands of dollars. This will only hurt your bottom line in the long run as a domainer.

You are probably asking by now, “if my domains suck then what do I do?” Another simple answer, buy quality domains. Any experienced domainer will tell you that domains will sell themselves if they have potential. Literally they will sell themselves with little to no work at all. Now I do not mean go buy domains for hundreds or thousands of dollars, this is an easy way to get burned quickly. This is another thing that experienced domainers know; hand regging is NOT dead. The Ultimate Guide To Successful Domaining

For those of you that do not know me I became a full time domainer about four months ago.  At the age of only 31 I am retired from four years of running successful real estate investment companies.  Not today, but soon I will share more details about my previous business and how it compares to domaining.

For now, I want to discuss one of my first purchases helping to prepare me for what was to come with domaining.  I googled the term domain ebook and came across several options.  I reviewed the sales site for each and the cost, of course looking for the best deal.  After reviewing everything I decided to purchase the Domaining Manifesto by John Motson.  At the time I had no clue who John was nor his experience in the domaining industry.  The information provided on his sales site seemed to be a fit for what I was looking for.

Let me fast forward to last week. I was visiting the industry blogs to see what everyone else was putting out.  I visited DNXpert as I do periodically and read something that showed an ebook.  I read a little more and it showed the Domaining Manifesto by John Motson.  After seeing this I emailed the owner of DNXpert and found that he is John Motson.  Long story short we have emailed each other several times since.  He has even featured an article of mine on his blog.

For me, the most useful thing about the ebook was the many different explanations about everything domain related.  Trying to learn a new businesses jargon is a project on its own, like learning a new language.  It has given me the inside scoop on what goes on in the domain industry.  I learned a lot about expired domains, tasting, registering, values, short domains, trademarks and many of other things.  In fact if I remember correctly this is how I found a few of the domainer forums.  Yes it is, looking at the ebook now and it shows how to buy and sell domain names on the forums.  It also has tips about trader ratings and how to keep the transaction as safe as possible.

That brings me to today. I wanted to share with everyone what I first read when starting in this business.  There is just too much information for me to list about this 86 page ebook.  It really has everything from A to Z about domaining.  It includes dozens and dozens of links to useful tools.  I strongly suggest you click here to view more details.  For ONLY $27 and it has a money back guarantee I could not have asked for more.  My opinion, BUY IT.  Since purchasing this particular ebook I have not had to buy any others.

Who Is The Worst Registrar

I think we all know the best registrar is GoDaddy. Well at least that is my personal opinion and from talking with other domainers it is usually between Moniker and GoDaddy. One question I get different answers on is who is the worst registrar? I want to here what my readers have to say.

In a couple weeks I will send the losing registrar an email with our results and ask them what they plan on doing to better their company. Once I here back from them I will be sure to post their response. Without comments I will not be able to send an email to the worst registrar.

Please vote and add a comment to why you think your choice is the worst. These comments will be used in my email to the losing registrar.

Interview with Rick Schwartz the Domain King

Last week I had the privilege of interviewing the one and only Rick Schwartz. Rick Schwartz is the founder of T.R.A.F.F.I.C., the events that turn out the who’s who in the domaining industry. Rick either owns or has owned domain names like Candy.com, Property.com, Properties.com, Porno.com, Ass.com, CD.com, Widgets.com, Men.com and many many more HIGH END names.

Just a brief background on Rick.  He has gone from working in the retail furniture business to owning an extremely successful drop ship company.  Rick sold the home based drop ship company in 1998 for over seven figures. Through marketing of his own home based business he realized the importance of domain names and having an online presence. Rick purchased a set of domains for his business and then a set of domains related to the adult industry.  The adult related domains started producing steady income from $25 a day to a couple years later $500 a day.  This at the time was just a hobby. These events and a few others lead up to the day were Rick purchased Porno.com for $42,000, which at that time was unheard of. After Porno.com came Ass.com, eRealEstate.com and Men.com. The rest is history and if your in domaining you know what has come of this.

Q. At the last T.R.A.F.F.I.C. event in Brooklyn NY 250 Rick Schwartz bobbleheads were handed out. Who came up with this idea?
A.
I was contacted by Warren Royal who is a domainer that bought Bobbleheads.com and asked me if it was ok to do one of me to promote his new business. I thought it would be fun and agreed to it. They did a really good job and shows the depth domainers have when it comes to business. Warren also recently authored a book and has several other projects going.
