Sedo Brokers Industry’s Highest .ORG Domain Sale

Leading Online Domain Marketplace Secures Record-setting $1 Million Bid for Poker.org

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., February 18, 2010 – Sedo, the leading online domain marketplace and monetization provider, today announced that it has brokered the sale of Poker.org for $1 million, the largest .ORG domain sale to date. Sedo brokered the sale on behalf of A-1 National Advertising. This marks the highest ever .ORG domain sale, as well as the biggest sale in its category. The next highest .ORG sales are engineering.org, which sold for $198,000, sexe.org for $151,400 and date.org for $151,000.

This record-setting sale demonstrates the tremendous strength of a premium generic within the overall domain market, and solidifies the value of the .ORG extension. According to .ORG, The Public Interest Registry’s (www.pir.org) 2009 bi-annual domain name report, registrations for .ORG grew 8.4%, up to 7.98 million total registrations in 2009, compared to a year ago.

In addition, there are more than 8 million domain names now registered as .ORG, making it the third largest generic domain (after .com and .net).

“We expect to see growing demand for .ORG domains, as organizations and individual investors are recognizing their full value and potential,” said Kathy Nielsen, Director of Sales at Sedo. “Sedo remains the choice for buying and selling the best previously registered virtual properties across all extensions, as evidenced by the impressive sale price secured for Poker.org.”

Sedo is also offering additional premium .ORG domains including Chocolate.org, Fun.org, and SeniorCitizens.org. Interested buyers should contact Senior Sales Consultant, Jeffrey Gabriel at Jeff@sedo.com or 617-499-7212 for further information.

Since your not suppose to use .org sites for commerical use. I guess poker.org will be a non-profit site to help gamblers.

.org names while maybe not making the most sense for a commercial site, are not prohibited in any way for being used for commercial use.

@Daniel Lambert

.org was originally created to serve non-commercial organizations like open-source projects, charities, political parties, etc, but as it has no restrictions at registration a .org domain can be used for a commercial site.

Having said that, in my humble opinion, outside the domaining world very few for-profit companies would go for a .org domain.

The sale of poker.org for $1m is either the exception that confirms the rule or the beginning of a new era :)
