Why Forward and Mask a Domain Name

Posted on 23 January 2009

Last week I learned how to forward and mask a domain name. I am extremely excited about this because it is such a powerful and underrated tool. This simple technique can make you hundreds if not thousands every single month. In just one week I have already made a few hundred dollars from this technique.

First let me give you the definitions of domain forwarding and masking.
Forwarding redirects visitors to another website when they go to the typed in URL.
Masking prevents the forwarded URL from displaying in the browser’s address bar.

Two weeks ago I was talking to a friend and he was telling me how he was not pleased with his hosting provider, he asked who was I using. I gladly told him Host Gator which hosts a dozen or so of my sites and am very pleased with. Making money online is my business, why not make an affiliate commission from my buddy signing up. Unfortunately at the time I did not have a domain forwarded, instead I had to say, “Do me a favor, go to my website and click on the Host Gator banner. If this isn’t the obvious I’m going to make money on your purchase I don’t know what is.” Being my friend he did it and signed up.

Now let’s say I was not talking to a friend and they wanted advice on hosting or any product for that matter, they may not have been as willing to go through my site. They may ask for the direct address. Am I to deny them the address? Wouldn’t it be great to say sure, go to eSiteHost.com for your hosting needs. Not only is this great on the phone but emails, print or even out in public. Maybe you are at a networking event where you know they always ask what do you do. You explain you have a few websites and make money online. They may follow up with questions about hosting and so forth. Here is your chance to say visit eSiteHost.com, that’s who I use. Now let’s say they like the service and now start to refer their associates to the site address because for all they know the address is what you told them. That is the power of masking; they believe they are getting service from the given domain name.

Getting back to my buddy, he develops websites for some of his church members. Because I’ve had this conversation with him he now directs his customers to eSiteHost.com for hosting and he will setup the site.

The psychology of some buyers…
They hate knowing you are making money on them. They not only think your advice is given just so you can make money but they may also assume because you are making money they can get a better price by going direct.

Watch the video for a quick tutorial on how to forward and mask your domain names. You may have to turn up the volume on your speakers.

Check it out for yourself, eSiteHost.com.

Update
One thing to add, not all affiliate companies allow for domain forward and masking. Make sure to read the terms of service (TOS) for each company you are dealing with.

.TV Sinking with The Island

Posted on 22 January 2009

About two weeks ago Bob Parsons insinuated on his video blog that the domain extension .TV would vanish with the sinking island of Tuvalu. Because of this brand new discovery (sarcasm) Bob is jumping ship and getting on the .me wagon. You can watch for yourself below.

It is true that Tuvalu is sinking, this is nothing new. We have known that the island of Tuvalu has been sinking for years and years. In fact this very same .tv discussion was mentioned back in 2004 on USAToday.com’s website. Reading the article explains the .tv extension is going nowhere, even if the island of Tuvalu does sink.

So why is Bob Parsons making a fuss of this now? Either he didn’t read the article in USA Today from 2004 or he is trying to make money. My guess would be the latter.  Bob is doing what he does best and trying to generate a buzz around the .me extension to boost registrations. If this was anything but about advertising Bob would simply use the .com version of his name which he owns and forwards to his .me extension.

I did email Bob’s PR Specialist Melanie today and asked that she pass on the question “Why the recent change of heart with the extension .tv”.  Actually I requested an interview with Bob Parsons about two months ago, November 24th to be exact. I submitted my questions and have been told with the holidays and now the Superbowl advertising Bob is extremely busy. I have to question the comment about Bob being busy, on January 14th I posted an interview he did with .INC Magazine. In that interview Bob was asked, you must be a real busy guy? Bob’s simple answer, “actually I’m not”. Hopefully Bob will read this and give some response.

In the mean time, don’t give up on the extension .tv, it is one of my favorites :)

Domainer Comic Strip #21

Posted on 21 January 2009

Sorry it has been a few weeks since adding a comic strip. Between the holidays, site changes and the recent contest it completely slipped my mind.

This weeks comic is extremely funny and very true.

Today History Is Made

Posted on 20 January 2009

I never talk politics, personally I don’t believe this is the forum for me to discuss my political, religious or educational beliefs. I do feel that today is special and something I must write about.

Today we the United States have sworn in the first African American President, Barack Obama. Obama was sworn in using the same Bible that was used in President Abraham Lincoln’s inauguration. Extremely fitting for the event having known that President Lincoln ended slavery.

For the first time ever I am truly excited about our Presidential selection. Never before have we needed change as much as we do right now. I believe President Obama is the man to do it.

Wedo.com For Sale On Sedo.com

Posted on 20 January 2009

I was going through some of my Sedo sales before heading to bed and noticed a domain name I just had to post about.  It’s late though and the sale doesn’t end for a few hours, I will be sure to post the results in the morning.

In the mean time…

Wedo, an obvious typo for Sedo is being sold on Sedo.com. Current bid is at $10,100 USD, only two bidders. How ironic that this name is being sold through Sedo.

Check it out for yourself, click here.

***UPDATE***

Wedo.com sold for $16,700. Last night I mentioned only the typo of Sedo but this is a true GEM. A great call to action domain name, “We Do” can mean a lot. Having said that I am a little surprised it went for so little. Maybe it was the timing of the auction, it did end around 3am est. Great buy whomever picked up WeDo.com, best of luck to you.
