Heading To The TRAFFIC Conference In NY

Posted on 24 October 2009

Are you going to the TRAFFIC conference? I am. In fact, this is my first domain industry conference. If you too are attending please post a comment below and let’s get together.

I am flying out in a few hours to attend the TRAFFIC conference in my hometown Brooklyn, New York. The conference begins Monday night with a welcome party by held DomainAdvertising.com and ends Wednesday night with Moniker.com’s domain auction. You can view the full agenda here.

Do you guys have any questions for these industry leaders?

So far I have already lined up interviews with the Castello brothers, Adam Dicker, Michael Berkens, Craig Rowe and Rob Monster. Of course things may change because of scheduling conflicts but this is what I have so far. I will try to add more if there is time.

If you want all the details from my trip make sure to follow my Twitter and Facebook streams. Also make sure to check back every day as I will be blogging live from the conference. Get all the updates and auction information as they happen.

PS – I apologize for not posting a video yesterday. I have been extremely busy trying to get as much work done as possible before leaving for TRAFFIC.

Who Got All The 1 and 2 Character .de Domains?

Posted on 23 October 2009

I wish I was able take the credit for this, but I cannot. My buddy Daniel Dryzek of DanielDryzek.com and MeetDomainers.com just shared with me this great list on Twitter. The list is made up of all the 1 and 2 character .de domain names registered earlier today. Daniel also posted a list of all the .de domain names that were bid on in Sedo’s pre-auction which you can check out on his blog.

I would say this list is about 97% complete.

DomainHack.com Open For Business

Posted on 22 October 2009

domainhack-240x60

Francois of Domaining.com has launched a new marketplace for hack domain names; DomainHack.com. This is the first of its kind! Personally I have never seen a marketplace that offers such domain names. In addition to the unique nature of this domain marketplace I can only see this helping to increase awareness and the value of hack domains.

Do you own a domain hack? Francois is seeking submissions into this brand new marketplace now. Visit DomainHack.com to submit your domain names for sale.

One more thing! DomainHack.com has a cool tool to help you generate hack domain names. Type in the full name and it will make the last 2-3 characters the domain extension if available.  For example, if I typed in Patrick and .ck happens to have it available, it would populate as Patri.ck.

What is a domain hack? (defined by wikipedia)

A domain hack is an unconventional domain name that combines domain levels, especially the top-level domain (TLD), to spell out the full “name” or title of the domain. Well-known examples include blo.gs, del.icio.us, and cr.yp.to.

Domains such as .as, .it, .me, or .us are easy to use as domain hacks because they correspond to short, simple dictionary words. Alternately, a name is chosen so that the last few characters match an existing top-level domain, such as “inter.net”, so that every character is used in forming the common name.

Domain hacks offer the ability to produce extremely short domain names. For example, blo.gs has a total of only five letters (versus blogs.com, at eight letters), as every letter is taken into account as the site’s title.

.de Launch Brings Sedo.com Down

Posted on 22 October 2009

*Sedo is back up. Total down time was about 100 minutes.

.de domain registry will be issuing 1 and 2 character names on a first come, first served basis beginning Friday, October 23rd and 12am PST.

Sedo.com is offering a pre-auction on the domain names that have not even been released. Remember though, as I mentioned it is “first come, first served registration”, Sedo does not have any rights to the domain names before opening to the public. What they do have are deals with several registrars to try and secure the domain names as soon as they become available. Interesting twist, as reported by DomainNameWire.com, “If Sedo’s partner registrars are unsuccessful during the “drop”, Sedo will attempt to acquire the domain name in the secondary market on the high bidder’s behalf.”

The new news here is with the popularity of their pre-auction, Sedo’s website is down! I just visited the site and received this message, “Due to the extremely high participation in the .De Pre-Auction Sedo?s website was temporarily down. We have decided to extend the auction until 8:00 PM CET. If necessary we will extend the auction later than this time to accommodate additional bids”.

This is the first time I have seen Sedo.com down. I’ll be sure to update this post when Sedo.com is back up.

Twitter message from approximately 1:35 PM EST.
