Well, not the world, technically. Not yet anyway. I have to take this in baby steps. First, I have to get over my fear of public speaking. If you remember I just got over my fear of roller coasters a few months ago. Now it’s time to get over this one. For me there is no better way than to jump right in and start talking about domain names.
Tonight I will be speaking about buying and selling domain names to a small group of 15-50 attendees. As far as I know, they have zero knowledge of our industry. I will have 45-60 minutes of time to explain the overall essence of buying and selling domains. That’s definitely not enough time to teach our business, but hopefully a start to get them interested.
Not only will I be speaking tonight, but again on Thursday night (provided I make it through tonight). Again, no better way to get over something than to jump right in and face it head on. If everything goes well the organizer and I will put together a 4 hour paid workshop hopefully before the end of the year. I also have intentions of offering my services to anyone that will listen, including domain and blog industry events.
I may try and get everything on video. If I do then I’ll post it tomorrow, as long as I don’t look too bad, lol.

Hopefully you will get it on video…good luck!
I recall that fear of speaking in public and was active in Toastmasters for a couple of years (earned my CTM). The fear of speaking in public is common but if you speak on a topic you are knowledgable of and passionate about, speaking will be much easier. Obviously preparation beforehand helps considerably. Best of luck!
I was just about to suggest Toastmasters as well. It was the key to improving my speaking skills. They “force” you to give speeches about something you know nothing about. It’s a fantastic way to hone your skills. I started with giving speeches to garden groups and eventually to large groups and then decided to give TV a try. I am on a weekly gardening show and ABC’s “garden expert” at noon. Check it out http://wicdtv.com/newsroom/features/garden/videos/vid_32.shtml
The first key is knowing your material and feeling comfortable with it, the second is being able to relay that information that is a combination of entertaining, informative, and interactive. You have the skills to be all three.
Good luck to you Patrick. I agree with Leonard when its something you know really well its a lot easier for you.
You’ll get use to speaking on stage the more you do it. You have to have an “I don’t give a darn” attitude about the fear. I use to hide behind my amplifier and didn’t date until 21 because of my fear of speaking. Just think of all the fun I missed out on! Actually I first spoke publically at the New York Traffic in 2007 so I still have a lot to learn. Good luck.
Michael, although Patrick displays an “I don’t give a darn” attitude – he does – and that’s why he is will be more successful :} his caring sweetness shine thru – we’re all rooting for you Patrick!
Good Luck Patrick! I used to be the same way but now it is just natural, just have confidence in your knowledge, you will do great!
Thanks for the support and encouragement. It went really well, at least for my first time. I get to do it again Thursday so that one should be even better.
You did a great job Patrick! – you were enganging, informative and fun! :} – proud of you – http://twitpic.com/o6taq – see you Thurs!
Good Luck Patrick!
If you need any help or tips drop me a line.
I am sure you will get through it. . .
I hope this works out, if it does you could do alot for the industry.
Thanks Robbie. That’s the goal, build the industry. Compared to physical real estate our industry is extremely small.
GO GET EM PATRICK!
I expect at least 10 new enthusiastic domain buyers chomping at the bit to get those domains after you’ve spoken!
We should see a jump at DNJ for the Weekly Domain Sales at about $100k? Yes?
Hey Chef,
I personally want to thank you for doing something so many of the parking companies (esp. those who charge 15% for auction sales) should have been doing years ago, and that is educating ‘the street’. I would love to know the type of organization you are speaking to…is it advertising, real estate, general business??? and possibly an abbreviated outline of your speech.
For other domainers interested in how to sell domains to the end-user, I have a little 5-point ‘letter’ that I am making available to everyone (((Just click my name above.)))
Use it for a blog, a sales letter or whatever means you communicate and educate others about domaining.
It’s time we stop hoarding and share the secret.
Thanks,
J. A. Lohmann
CP,
Be natural and find your own way to relax while on stage. Many people find it relaxing to be funny or have everything on slides. Whatever you feel that relaxes (holding teddy) you, go with it.
Good luck.

Curious how you came across this group. Were they gathered to learn about domains specifically? Looking forward to hearing about it.
