Naughty Domainer Award #1

Posted on 16 April 2009

In my Friday video I announced Rick Latona as ChefPatrick.com’s first Naughty Domainer Award winner. Naughty can be good or bad. In this case it was good.

Rick gets this award for his Courage and Honesty. Rick had the Courage to put on an all adult auction and had the Honesty to say was terrible. His exact words were “We think the results were terrible and completely unacceptable”. Rick then turned things around with the sale of WebCam.com for $1,020,000.

I was chatting with Rick today about the award, this is what he had to say. “I’ve been naughty all my life. It’s an honor to be finally recognized for it”.

The Naughty Domainer Award can be good or bad and I have no determined time frame to give them out. So be careful, you could be next and it might not be good!

“Naughty Domainer”…

Give readers good content and you won’t need to link bait with nasty chicks in videos and “naughty domainer” awards.

It is my opinion that your content was a lot better back before you started all this stuff. Make it that way again, I really liked your blog then but it has gotten tougher to stomach over the last couple of months.

Troy, Patrick does these videos with taste and the girls in the videos are definitly not “nasty”. I enjoy that Patrick has a personality and puts his personality on *HIS blog* instead of the same boring, dry material that gets circulated on the net.

Yeah… I revoke the “nasty” part, I regretted that after after writing it. That was the wrong word to use. I think my point it valid though. Patrick has taken a good blog, in my opinion, in the wrong direction recently.

Less appealing to the lowest common denominator and more appealing to domaining and domain related issues would be better I believe.

I don’t intend to insult Patrick, like I said I have enjoined his blog, just don’t want to write it off.

Troy, there is a lack of “entertaining domainer blogs”. I think it’s a good thing. :) But everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Tia – Thanks for the kind words and support.

I know what you are saying and respect your opinion. You have been a good long time reader and I appreciate it. I will say that article quality has gone down over the last 2-4 weeks, not all but SOME. As I said the other day I have a few products I am launching that has taken a lot of time from me. I will be back into the swing of things very soon.

For the direction of the site. I have become more and more personal as time goes. I am also becoming a voice for the domain industry. People that would never even think to visit a domain name related site visit because of the fun I bring to things. My readership and visits have gone up consistently every month.

There is nothing wrong with my video. My girl Elizabeth is very classy and a smart girl. It is fun to have someone to create the video with, we feed off of each other when it comes to the domain sales. I would even say my last video was the best one yet. For the Naughty Domainer Award, there is nothing wrong with that. Awards are given all the time, mine is creative and fun. If you can’t have fun while your doing it then don’t do it.

Stick around Troy, I don’t want to lose you as a reader. Every single reader counts to me.

Thanks Patrick, and please realize that I don’t think your “girls” are nasty=) I shouldn’t have written that and it was typed out before I really thought much about that use of the word. I meant not insult to them.

As shown by Tia my opinion is certainly not the only one out there and I still look forward to reading your blog.

“more appealing to domaining and domain related issues would be better I believe.”

I have this said to me from time to time, Elliot does etc. I picked DotWeekly.com for a reason. It’s not DomainWeekly.com. ChefPatrick.com is ChefPatrick.com etc.

I get a kick out of when people feel I should only write about domain’s (I mainly do, but this still shouldn’t limit me, because my domain doesn’t)

Domainers bitch at me for writing things “they” know already but the fact is.. a lot of end users and people outside the domain world read my site, Chef’s and so on.

It’s likely the same people bitching, do not blog them self. It’s not easy.

Keep doing what your doing Chef ;)

Jamie is right in saying that most of the people doing the “bitching” don’t even have blogs. That is certainly right in my case, I am willing to critique others blogs but not committed enough to start my own, I readily admit it=).

The last thing I will say (before stopping posting on this particular thread)is that my only real complaint/suggestion to Patrick was that he didn’t need to attract readers to his blog using close up videos of woman’s breasts and catchy words like “naughty”. That is the equivalent of ebay domain sellers selling domains like asldkfawo.com then adding a picture of a girl in a bikini to get visitors to the auctions. Quality bloggers like Patrick don’t need to resort to those tactics, their content alone is sufficient.

I think it is good for Patrick to post on things not domain related (that is why he went from DNKitchen to ChefPatrick right?). I just wanted to suggest that he is good enough to attract visitors without having to resort to “eye candy” and words like “naughty”. I feel like when he is “brainstorming” his next “link bait” title it takes away from his real ability to be a good blogger.

I wouldn’t have even commented if I didn’t think he was good enough to stand on this own.

Now that I am offending bloggers I might as well give you a little advice Jamie…

Get a new picture of your face that appears next to your blog, every time I see your scowling I feel like you are going to reach through my computer screen a beat me up. Smile, as my wife tells me, its the second best thing you can do with your lips.

That was a good reply Troy and I agree with what you said this time.

As for my picture, check out NameBee.com and by my postings you will see me smiling my ass off :D As for the Domaining.com picture, ahh I played hockey my whole life so I have to look mean from time to time. That was a hockey look ;)

Troy, there are plenty of people who love Patrick because he’s Patrick. Not because he just reports cool domain news. :)

“I just wanted to suggest that he is good enough to attract visitors without having to resort to “eye candy” and words like “naughty”.”

He IS good enough on his own, yes. But Patrick is just doing Patrick.

“I feel like when he is “brainstorming” his next “link bait”…”

He is having fun being himself. It’s refreshing, fun and entertaining. He’s not doing it in a perverted, slutty or distasteful way. If you want something for comparison, google “godaddy videos” to see what slutty really means.

“Now that I am offending bloggers…”

Not offended but if you do really have a need for domainer content in a certain format, open a blog. :D

I think you’re making too much of a big deal of someone being themselves and having the right to do so. And these girls….must feel really bad after being called “nasty”. :(

Tia,

I already apologized for the “nasty” comment. It was not intended that way.

Patrick certainly has the right to be whatever and who ever he wants, especially on his blog. But I can also comment on things as well.

“slutty” and “distasteful” are two different words, with different definitions depending on who you ask. I don’t think his blog is slutty, I think it is occasionally distasteful, not in the content but in the occasional method he uses to attract visitors to it. Either way, it is his blog to do with as he wants and I recognize that.

I have come to like “who” Patrick is as well from what I have read in his blog, I was just voicing my opinion and obviously mine and yours differ.=)

Anyway, I meant no hard feelings to anyone.
