My First Dot US Domain Name

Posted on 22 July 2009

dot us domain namesI did it. I bought my first .us domain name today and have to admit it feels pretty good. I purchased SuicideHelp.us.

A lot of factors played a role in today’s purchase. One of the domain names in auction today at Bido was SuicideHelp.org. I know I always preach to NOT fall in love with your domain names, but for some reason I instantly fell in love with the name, not because I believed I can make money from it, but because I believed I could do some good with it. As soon as the auction started I placed several bids and kept bidding throughout. Seven out of the nineteen total bids were mine. At a certain point I told myself I have to stop, even then I continued. Finally, I stopped submitting bids at $205 which was $2 shy of the $207 winning bid. Without giving up and still believing I can do good with a similar domain I searched GoDaddy to see if any of the other extensions were taken. To my surprise .tv, . me, .us and .biz were still available.

So why did I go with the .us version?

  • I like .us as it is my country’s domain extension.
  • The other day I read Morgan Linton’s blog about which TLD’s are best for SEO. It outlined which TLD’s have done the best for him with mini-sites and the top had a .us domain extension.
  • I’ve been reading and seeing a lot about the domain extension lately. In fact, one of the top sales of the week is a .us domain extension at $35,532.
  • The icing on the cake…GoDaddy is currently running a special on .us domain names for only $4.99.

My plans for this domain are simple. I want to create a kick ass mini-site within the next 7 days that will hopefully provide some inspiring content to convince potentially suicidal people to stay with us. Once I get done with the mini-site I’ll post it for everyone to see.

I’m happy to see someone else as passionate as I am on the subject. Keep fighting the good fight.

The true value of this domain, of course, is the purpose for its development, which is priceless. Can’t wait for you to get the site up.

I like .us domains, too! I know they aren’t .com’s but are a great 2nd seat to them. I actually prefer them to .net which just says, “I’m 2nd seat”. .us says, “I may be 2nd seat BUT I’m American!”

My latest .us faves are: InternetDomainName, CharlotteHomesForSale, and LaptopRam.

They are $4.99 at Moniker. Can’t beat ‘em!

Without getting distracted by the fact that .us domain names will probably rank at 4th most popular by 2012 (.com, .org, .de, .us), I just wanted to thank you for focusing on convincing people not to take their lives, regardless of how bleak things look.

Everyday is a new opportunity, a new chance to feel alive and enjoying it. Get help and “stay with us”.

Way to go Patrick. I like your domain and purpose.

@Stephen Douglas – Thanks for your comment. You are right on! Patrick’s financial commitment to the name, regardless of the extension, is to be commended. May many find help as a result of this purchase.

StimulusCheck.us and SuicideHelp.us are great choices for the .us tld. They are focused and relevant to a US citizen and for $4.99, I think your domain grab is a winner. Congrads!

While I’m not a big fan of that name, I do think .us is a great extension overall, with a lot of potential and very cheap at the moment.

A few noteable ones in auction right now as well:

- Sedo – halloween.us, drycleaners.us

- Bido – bankrupt.us (today), freecreditreports.us

.us is gonna be great!

Thank you everyone for the support. I’m excited to get this project started.

In the mean time I will be registering at least ten .us domains today.

I’m not a big fan of hand registrations though. The return takes waaaay too long with any available name. The aftermarket and drops have the quickest ROIs.

good luck!
