My First Dot US Domain Name – Part II

Posted on 30 July 2009

Last week I wrote about buying my first .us domain name. After losing a Bido auction for SuicideHelp.org which sold for $207 I hand registered the .us version. As promised I would create a mini-site to help those that may be suicidal.

suicide help

My future plans are to do some SEO work and continue adding articles maybe once or twice per month. I may also solicit people to submit their real world suicide stories via text or video. At this point I have no plans of monetizing the site in any way.

So what do you think? I know the header is a shocker. That’s the goal, want to get the point across.

    Nice Work… :-)

  2. Jason says:

Is that a bloody rose in mid header? Hard-core… lookin’ good!

  3. Dan Bell says:

This site looks good. The graphics are very creative. I particularly like Myths and Facts section. Suggestion – bold the 800 numbers or larger font.

Thank You for getting involved, it’s a good cause.

    -Dan

  4. Ross says:

Thanks for doing the right thing with that domain Patrick!

  5. Ozie Jackson says:

Nice base of information to build off of.

  6. Jeff Jones says:

Outstanding! What a great resource you’ve provided.

  7. I’m not an atty or legal expert or accountant, but I think if you spend time and build this site out, provide expert resource contacts at all levels, and ask for volunteer content to help those who sadly feel that they’ve got nothing to live for, you can get a nonprofit status on this and set it up as a working charity. If you do the right thing, then we all wouldn’t think “Dang that Patrick, all that cheffing around with those pretty girls and such!” — we’d say “wow, that guy really has a conscience and stands up for it!”

    good job, Patrick

I commend Patrick for being creative and venturing into development. This field is so exciting. So many different avenues to explore.

It occurred to me that some RSS feeds on the SuicideHelp.us site might be useful to readers, something on managing depression symptoms. Fellow domainer, Tariq Ghafoor, owns Psychiatry.us (he is a psychiatrist in Arizona) and has rss feeds on his site. Also noticed that WebMD has a section devoted to dealing with depression: (http://www.webmd.com/depression/default.htm). HealthCentral.com also have a list of contributor rss feeds on depression that might be available upon request.

I’ll add that the visual aspects and content of the site might be more important than meet the eye. Severely depressed individuals experiencing suicidal thoughts are in an extremely delicate state often unable to think clearly & feeling easily overwhelmed. If someone lands on the site, you can bet they are in search of support and answers. Kind of good to keep that in mind as the site grows and evolves. Support, hope, options, and solutions would be good overriding focus I think.

From a business perspective, I know that treatment centers of all varieties from substance abuse to the full range of mental health disorders are big on advertising, very big. As Patrick’s site evolves, there may be some unexpected opportunities for partnering and ad revenue. The domain name is very pure, very focused. A nice acquisition.

  9. Ozie Jackson says:

Setting aside the serious tone for a moment, there is nothing wrong with “cheffing around with those pretty girls and such!” either!

  10. Mike says:

Nice name and mini-site! I too have picked up a few more .us domains lately.

  11. Chef Patrick says:

Thank you everyone for your support and input. It’s greatly appreciated.

  12. M. Menius says:

The site looks great Patrick and the content is right on. Congrats to you.

I have written about your work & accomplishment on my blog. The domaining community is lifted by people such as you who show that domainers are actually fair-minded, creative people, who do good things. Thanks!

  13. kfink says:

    Well-done, Chef.

Not to be knit-picky – but the line

“Females attempt suicide three times as much [than] males.”

    should probably read

“Females attempt suicide three times as much [as] males.”

[ Random Sidenote: and not to make light of the subject matter, but...if women attempt 3x as much as men, and yet there are 4x male deaths per 1x female death...doesn't that imply that women don't often succeed at ...um...their attempts? This baffled and yet interested me... ]
