Interview With Jeff Kupietzky CEO of Oversee.net

Posted on 20 January 2010

Yesterday I posted part one of this two part interview of Jeff Kupietzky. In part one Jeff answered five “halvarez” questions that previously went unanswered which you can read here. Here, in part two of the interview you will learn more about Jeff and Oversee.net.

Q. Tell us about the beginning. How you came to Oversee.net and the two founders.
A.
Oversee.net was founded in 2000 when two colleagues got together to create a service to provide advertising listings for web publishers. Lawrence Ng came from USC and Fred Hsu came from UCLA so the joke here is it’s the first time those two arch rivals collaborated on something.

Their business became successful as they discovered many of their customers had been using their service for their domain names that had traffic but no content. They had the foresight to begin registering domain names and become their own client, improving the service for their and their clients’ benefit.

The company began to accelerate its growth in 2004 and started adding more talent. I met the founders in 2005 and was intrigued by the success they had achieved without outside financing, no venture capitalists and no MBAs! In 2006, I joined the company as a consultant to help introduce a compensation plan for the DomainSponsor sales force. That led to a role managing the team, then the business unit and ultimately the division.

In 2005, the company began to look at diversifying through acquisitions and recognized the need for outside financial resources to help. In late 2006, we closed a $100 million line of credit with Bank of America and other institutions that allowed us to accelerate our acquisitions. The company in 2007 purchased SnapNames, Moniker and Lowfares.com. In the meantime, we also became a large acquirer of traffic portfolios which is still something few companies specialize in.

We wanted to aggregate all the services a domain owner would need to manage their digital assets. This included the tools for registering, appraising, securing, listing, leasing and ultimately buying and selling names.

Q. What is your personal background before Oversee.net?
A. I had a traditional general business background, having worked at McKinsey & Co. and earning my MBA at Harvard, but was turned on to the opportunities of the Internet in 1998 when I joined Siebel Systems (now Oracle) to launch their first dot com initiative, Sales.com. This was before salesforce.com was started and our view was that creating software as a service (SaaS) would have a huge impact on the traditional enterprise software business.

I moved to another early web pioneer, Loudcloud, prior to its IPO. Loudcloud (now owned by HP) was started by Marc Andreessen and other ex-Netscapers and was offering all web services as a utility. We endured the quick scale-up and -down through the dot com implosion earlier this decade.

From there I went to Digital Insight (Intuit), a So-cal based SaaS company specializing in consumer and business banking for the regional banks and credit unions. It was when I was leaving DI that I met Lawrence and Fred and got intrigued by what they were building.

Q. What is your educational background?
A. I have a BA in economics and an MBA but as many of my friends in Silicon Valley like to remind me, going to school for business is like learning to play hockey from video-tapes. It’s nothing like learning from real experience where you strap on pads and prepare to take some hits. I’m fortunate to have met many successful entrepreneurs who have shared their experiences with me and helped balance the formal learning I received in school.

Q. Do you personally invest in domain names? If yes, what names do you own?
A. It would be a stretch to call me a “domainer” in the true sense of the term as our clients are. I bought a few names to understand the services but none have made me rich or famous yet!

Q. How many domain names does Oversee.net own?
A. Close to 800,000.

Q. Can you list a few of the premium domain names that Oversee.net owns?
A. Sure. We own low.com, compare.com, identitytheft.com, degrees.com, marriages.com, lawoffices.com, dreamvacations.com, and weatherreports.com, among others.

Q. Rumors are that there will be a second DOMAINfest in 2010, is that true? If so when and where?
A. We are working on an exciting set of events for 2010 but have not made any announcements yet. We will tell folks at DOMAINfest Global the specifics.

Q. How many domain names where bought and sold through SnapNames in 2009/2009? Any sales figures to share?
A. Approximately 135,000 names were bought and sold through our Aftermarket platforms.

Q. How many domain names are registered with Moniker every year?
A. Moniker has approximately 2.6 million names currently registered.

Q. How many domain names are parked with DomainSponsor?
A. In any given month, over 6 million domains are parked with DomainSponsor.

Q. What is the future for Oversee.net?
A. We’re excited about three areas of focus and growth for us. As the leader in monetization for direct navigation (parking) we’re bullish on future optimization enhancements to improve monetization as well as the opportunity to grow outside of our traditional US base. More than half of our traffic comes from outside the US but we still get most of our revenue domestically. There’s a big opportunity to use our technological know-how to close that gap.

The second key area is leveraging our strong assets in the aftermarket and registrar area to provide continued great service for our domain clients. This includes running the best expiry-drop service, the best live and online domain auctions, customized brokerage services and the premier relationship registrar offering.

Finally, we are believers in the buildout opportunities and have begun to invest in developing tools and solutions to help build out domains. This would include using our expertise in traffic management, landing page optimization and the other capabilities needed to evolve parked pages to deeper, more involved web properties.

The best quote I’ve heard on business school “going to school for business is like learning to play hockey from video-tapes.” Awesome guy, we met at the domainer meetup in Boca.

    Good job Chef!

    Dan

  2. Jacob says:

Haha, that is an awesome quote. Amazing 800,000 names.

  3. Ong says:

Wow…just look at the generics they owned. No wonder they hit it so big!
