Indianapolis.in and TampaBay.tv

Posted on 17 August 2009

A little over a week ago I mentioned that I would be acquiring some GEO domain names to develop. On Friday’s Bido live video chat I announced two. For those of you that did not catch the chat or replay, the two GEO domain names are Indianapolis.in and TampaBay.tv.

I don’t think words can explain my excitement to get going on these projects. Let me share some statistics on the areas and maybe you will understand.

Indianapolis, the capital of Indiana, is also the United States 14th largest city with a population of just under 800,000 residents. Indianapolis is home to the NBA Pacers, NFL Colts and Indy 500 mile race.

Tampa Bay is the United States 19th largest metropolitan area with a population of 2,773,768 residents which I know for a fact is low. Depending on who you ask, Tampa Bay can be made up of between 4 to 8 counties. Living in Tampa Bay myself for 15 years, I know that we consider it 8 counties. With the added counties the population is made up of well over 4,000,000 residents. Tampa Bay is home to the NFL Buccaneers, MBA Rays and NHL Lightening. Beyond sports, Tampa Bay has Busch Gardens amusement park and several beautiful beaches making this area a hot spot for tourists.

What are my development plans?

Indianapolis.in will be a single city platform similar to what Elliot Silver has done with Burbank.com. TampaBay.tv will be a little bit more involved and have a multi-city/county platform similar to Bruce Marler’s Missouri.me.

My goal is to have both sites up and running within the next 45 days. I will keep everyone updated as progress is made.

    GOod luck Chef!

  2. Bruce Marler says:

Congrats buddy! Cannot wait to see them as they progress.

  3. Speaking of Indianapolis, I got tickets to the 2010 Final Four for mens basketball!

  4. RandallB. says:

Looks like two great domains to develop both are large enough that I am sure you could have a few sites on each of them.

  5. I can’t wait to see how they turn out, what platform are you going to be using to develop the names?

    • Chef Patrick says:

Not 100% sure yet. Believe it or not we are considering going with WordPress as the base platform. Kelowna.com is built off of WP.

  6. Jeff says:

You should blog about the development steps you are taking… it would be very interesting to learn.

  7. Jason says:

WoW! Fantastic names! I especially like TampaBay.tv =D

  8. I like tampabay over indianapolis because .tv extension is more recognized than .in so ChiefPatrick before you start your project think twice.

Good luck to your project and see if it rocks.

    • Chef Patrick says:

I like a challenge. To my knowledge no one has used .in to build a successful Geo site. Gotta keep things fun.

Plus it is an amazing hack.

  9. Ricky says:

Sounds good…..once its up advise what tools you used and the steps it took to build out (ie: time, money etc)

    Cant wait!

  10. I like the TampaBay.tv a lot, has a lot of potential for content involving some videos, or live streams, etc.

  11. GUA says:

How come you have made no mention of the reasoning behind the extensions in your post? I for one feel .in doesn’t fit a US city at all?

    • Chef Patrick says:

.in for Indiana which is that state which Indianapolis is located :)

      I think it’s a kick ass hack.

  12. Jeff says:

GUA – I think he’s using .in to stand for Indiana.

  13. Good luck – looks like two interesting projects. TampaBay.tv looks like it has more potential to me (more recognized extension and bigger population), but Indianapolis likely has less online competition, but still a good population base.

  14. Tim Davids says:

You’ve sure been cooking up something chef…tampabay.tv is a great one…

  15. I really like TampaBay.tv. Let us know how your project progresses.

  16. Borat says:

Tampa Bay has some verrrrry nice strip clubs. Good luck Mr. Chefy.

  17. Chef Patrick says:

Thank you everyone for the support. As progress is made I’ll definitely post updates. Things will be at a stand still for a few days while we figure out the base platform. So far WordPress is leading the pack.

Hopefully if I have some public success with the .in and .tv domain extensions it will help drive up values for everyone.

  18. Jamie Parks says:

“Hopefully if I have some public success with the .in and .tv domain extensions it will help drive up values for everyone.”

…and for this we thank you :) You can achieve anything that you set your mind to.

  19. GUA says:

Ah I see.. shows my American knowledge :)

  20. Mike says:

Nice names. Of course, I especially like TampaBay.tv – very exciting, especially since you reside there. One question; Is TampaBay.tv a premium renewal?

I must say that I had not put together the good ‘hack job’ you did on Indianapolis.in until it was mentioned. You’ve just got to get a contest going on that site for the Final Four!

    • Chef Patrick says:

Yes it is a premium renewal, $1,000 per year. I would love to pick up Florida.tv but Enom wants an astronomical $25,000 per year.

I think the hack will do well in Indiana. Most of the residence will get it, I hope :)

  21. M. Menius says:

Way to go Patrick. Your expertise in online video could be a great inroad to making TampaBay.TV a special site. Tampa Bay bikinis and beaches might be a nice start, ;-) .

Kelowna and Burbank on WordPress? So’s my latest geo project for Charlotte. WordPress seems to be one of the best overall packages, and so SEO friendly.

    • Chef Patrick says:

      lmao

Starting off it will be mostly news feeds. My plans are to hire professional reporters and writers after a few major ad sales.

I don’t think Burbank is using WordPress. But WordPress is an easy to use platform. My development team can bend and shape it anyway we need. And like you said, very SEO friendly.

      What is your project?

  22. M. Menius says:

Charlotte.US Patrick. It’s a foundation, framed out, and a few walls up. Want it to be really nice one day. I’m pretty big fan of the WordPress. You seem to be a fan as well. It’s a good product no doubt.

The professional reporters would be truly first class. I read that Skip Hoagland (Atlanta.com) sent an invitation letter to the writers at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. I do see city geo portals becoming very important. Glad you’re in the mix.

  23. Cooler says:

    Hi Chef,

How much do you plan on investing into the development for these? (if it’s not a secret, of course)

Do you have a monetizing plan?

    • Chef Patrick says:

No secrets. I have agreed to partnership terms with my development team. They will build the sites out and manage SEO for a percentage of ownership.

For monetizing…DIRECT AD SALES. Plans are to pick up the phone and call or visit every business in the area, big and small. I have already contacted a couple sales professionals in Tampa Bay to help me with this. They will be paid on commissions.

  24. Cooler says:

You couldn’t do it any better. Great plan. :-)

Can you tell us how you acquired these domains? Were they expensive?

    • Chef Patrick says:

Partnerships for the domains as well. I leveraged my reputation and management skills to create a team where everyone will benefit if successful.

I’ll be writing a more in depth article about this either later this week or early next week.

  25. Chef Patrick says:

Just added a new blog post to give you guys my thought process around development.

  26. directory says:

    excellent geo pickup :)
