I somehow stumbled across a comic strip on music.us that shows a guy letting his .com domain name drop and instead using the alternative extension .music. Hmmm, I don’t know, it would really depend on what the .com was.
My opinion on .music…I like it. I actually like the idea of extensions like .music and .movie IF registrations are restricted to the musicians and movie companies. Sorry domain investors, I don’t think these extensions should be open for us. For these types of extensions to succeed they must be used for the purpose intended.
What are your thoughts?
I think this could be one of those new extensions that might work – as an application, not as a wide open new TLD. If limited to music companies and musicians that makes it more of a specific application and could be great. If open to all and you end up with mortgage.music – well, that makes no sense.
Application specific new TLDs? Maybe.
Wide open new TLDs? Likely not a good idea.

I wish dotMusic all the best, but the only people who will walk away from this with a smile on their face will be whatever company gets the rights to the TLD. DotTravel did a great job of strictly enforcing their TLD, spent a small fortune on promotion and it sank like a stone. And their logic made sense. DoTravel should have been a huge success IF all of the US cities and states had jumped on it. In reality, they all did a collective shrug. And dotMusic? Put it this way, Eric Clapton won’t be trading in EricClapton.com for EricClapton.music anytime soon unless he’s paid big bucks to promo it. On the other hand, I love their cartoon sketch. If a million garage bands buy into it they’ll make bank.

This was talked about at DMG last week. The only people making money on all the new extensions is ICANN and registrars.
My 10 cents worth is if the .music TLD is able to win the hearts and minds of the music industry (i.e. artists, bands, recording studios), the rest will follow.
If we’re going to have some new tld’s offered, .music is one I’d like to see succeed. I’m for only a few new tld’s, only a few. And see where they land. Agree that .travel was a perfect new extension & opportunity, however look what happened. Indeed, the world just shrugged, as David said, and had no desire for a .travel tld.
Constantinos Roussos, who owns music.us, has been a great investor and supporter of alternate extensions. Personally, I’d like to see that work out for him. The local garage band angle may actually be a powerful driver of .music registrations. Music has always been one of the internet’s best offerings. Lots of question marks about making a new tld work large scale.
Thank you everyone for the kind comments and the support. The .music extension will only be reserved for music entities and the music community. Premium domains will not be auctioned and will be used in the best interests of the .music registrants. I can not disclose more information about the platform that will power the .music TLD but it will certainly achieve the goal of creating additional value to the music community.

I can not spill the beans about what I am up to but rest assured, the .music TLD will surprise you all. History has shown that TLDs on their own create minimal value. The .music initiative will be powered by the Music.us platform and marketplace. More on that later but it has received rave reviews by all that have tested it.
