Domain Name Organization – Spreadsheet

Posted on 04 June 2009

Monday I posted Domain Name Renewal Scams and what steps to take in order to protect yourself. One of the steps is to verify you own the domain name in question. For myself I keep a spreadsheet that logs all of my names, sales and drops. Since posting the article I have had several requests via comments and email for my spreadsheet.

You asked for it so here it is. Click download to get a copy of my domain name Excel spreadsheet.

The spreadsheet is not going to win any design awards and honestly this is not something I created for the masses. It is a simple Excel spreadsheet that allows me to track purchases, sales and dropped domains. For the download I input a few example domain names just to show how it works. Of course you’ll want to delete those and replace with your own data.

The excel spreadsheet was created using Microsoft Office 2003. I am not sure of the compatibility with other Office versions. Because I did not create this for the masses I will not be offering much support. I will answer some simple questions but nothing too complex. Having said that the spreadsheet is completely free and you can do with it whatever you’d like. I take that back, please do not redistribute it elsewhere.

I know there are paid services and spreadsheets on the market. Because I have not used any of them I cannot suggest or recommend any.

One piece of advice I will give with Excel and the spreadsheet is utilization of data sorting. If you are not familiar with Excel you can click data on the menu bar then select sort. Using this function you can sort by the different headings. For example if you would like to see all of your expiring domain names simply sort by expiration date or if you have a client looking for a specific type of domain name you can sort by category.

I hope this helps and if there are any questions please post them in comments for everyone to reference.

Two questions,
Presumably this chart size (width) prints to a legal, landscape page? So if I add columns won’t have the hard copy print option and will need to just reference from computer, correct? Is that how you utilize yours?
And two, re expiry dates. I admit I am just learning the ropes with Excel but presumbly you have to manually update the expiry dates on your chart after each renewal? Meaning there’s nothing magical with Excel that does it for you some way?
Thanks Chef!

I’m pretty sure it’s too wide to print. I had to print a few off one time and if I remember correctly I had to hide a bunch of rows for it to work.

Correct, you will have to manually adjust the expiry dates if and when you renew a domain name. I’m sure there is a formula to do it automatically but I’m not the best with MS Excel.

Thanks P, if you find out or anyone else knows about a formula to auto adjust expiry dates for domains if using Excel as spreadsheet – let us know!

Excellent :-)

I will incorporate similar format into the workbook I use.

Mine has too many sheets I think though, there are almost 30 :-(
