In any market it's not always about what is, it is often times more about what it seems it is. If anyone is curious about how perceptions can influence the outcome of a given situation, I will be holding an auction next month next to the recycling bin in the parking lot behind the Burger Shack down the road from my house, top notch names and an atmosphere that can't well... you get the idea :-) Coming from an extensive sales and marketing background, I can shed a bit of light on situations such as this. In any market it’s not always about what is, it is often times more about what it seems it is.

Whether they paid it or not... the 'excess; is still disgusting, unnecessary and unfortunately typical. Seems like some still have not "gotten" it yet. Unless they see something that I don't or have some stealth strategy, I can't see the business sense in holding the auctions in such a prestigious venue.
