.CM Launching Friday At 4am EST

Posted on 17 September 2009

As Michael Berkens said yesterday “maybe the third time will be the charm“. That’s right, this is the third attempt to launch the .cm domain extension.

On another note Morgan Linton posted the .cm scam. The article says .cm domain owners will not be able to change their name servers until 2010. I’m not sure if that is completely accurate. I know a couple .cm domain owners and it does look like they have been able to change their name servers. As there have been delays in the launch I am sure there will be delays in any changes needed. Keep that in mind when registering yours.

I personally will not be registering any .cm domain names. And it’s not because they are the .com typos, I believe typo investing is perfectly fine for domain investors. I won’t be registering any because this extension is too much of an unknown. No one really knows how much typo traffic each name will generate.  Beyond that the cost is astronomical. The ranges in price I’ve seen is $119-$249 per year. If you do decide to register a .cm domain name you may want to check out one of my sponsors, 101domain.com.

Moustapha Saya Kaigama, CEO of Netcom.cm, posted the following message to their site yesterday:

“Netcom.cm Sarl has decided to move the registration platform for .CM top-level domains to its own server instead of a hosted version with Cocca. This will allow Netcom more flexibility and control over the zone.

Sunrise domains, which have been validated and had at least two name servers, were connected on August 28, 2009. We kindly ask all registrars to provide us the missing name server information, so that the few remaining domains can also be connected.

All landrush domains that had only a single application and at least two name servers defined have also been connected on August 28, 2009. The landrush domains which are auctioned at NameJet will be connected once we receive the information from NameJet that the domains have been paid for and to which registrants the domains should be allocated.

GO – LIVE Information !

The Go-Live will start on September 18, 2009 at 08:00am UTC.”

08:00am UTC converts to 04:00am EST

We should put money on if it actually launches this time:)

I did pick up 4 .CM domains, still trying to get the Enom URL redirect to work (you can do this to forward the name where needed).

  2. TeenDomainer says:

I’ll bet it does not happen, going on the past record I have some good odds. I will also not be buying any names until I see some data of traffic. I know I always forget the o when typing .com

    Only time will tell

  3. Cole says:

    Bruce,

I also am looking for the host records to start redirecting. Enom support advised that it would take up to 14 days for URL redirection/www forwarding to occur.

Hope it’s a little quicker and I hope the launch goes smoothly.

  4. Morgan says:

From my understanding you can setup redirection/www forwarding but you cannot change the nameservers with enom until 2010.

Someone did report on my blog today that they were able to change their nameserver at 101Domain but it takes roughly 1.5 weeks to update the dns but still better than 2010.

The Domains did an article about this back in July warning people that they might not be able to update their nameservers until 2010. You can read that article at the link below:

  5. Jesse says:

Save your money.. these things are going to be a complete waste of time in my opinion… If someone is going to typo .com they will hit .c0m or .cpm etc etc the chances of missing a key stroke completely have to be very very very small, unless you type nice and gentle like a 3 year old girl, I know the way I bang keys I’m more likely to hit 3 extra than miss one.

For the price of registration, not worth it unless you are going to reg an infringing domain in which case you will face litigation anyhow.. Of course, this is just my opinion :-)

  6. I had google.cm, mail.cm in my cart along with a handful of others that had been accepted as not taken and sent into the registrar today. it showed them as registered and I was pretty excited, knowing before a lawsuit from google hit me that I could try to pocket large amount of ppc traffic.

eventually they were taken away from me within an hour.

i did get one that stayed as registered in my name, NBC.cm , which gets about on average over 1000k hits a month according to compete.com

12-15k hits a year of unique targeted traffic is worth $199 a year.

  7. Michele says:

We are an accredited .cm registrar and I can assure you that .cm dns updates / changes are working fine on our systems. I’ve been swapping the nameservers back and forwards on a couple of .cm domains that I registered without any issue.

    Regards

    Michele
